Le groupe formé initialement sous le nom de Dark Blue à la fin 2004 par des amis d'enfance : Brett Hesla, Troy MacLawhorn, Clint Lowery, Corey Mowery and Will Hunt. Après avoir signé avec Warner Bros Records, ils ont commencé à enregistrer leur premier album avec le réalisateur Ben Grosse, dont les productions précédentes comprennent Filter, Fuel, Sevendust et Alter Bridge. Le 29 janvier 2005 le nom du groupe fut changé de Dark Blue en Dark New Day, sans qu'aucune raison ne soit donnée. Le groupe mis quelques titres de Twelve Years Silence, leur premier album, en ligne. Des morceaux tel que Taking Me Alive, Lean ou encore Healing The Time ce sont retrouvés sur leur MySpace.
